Choosing the right bed size is one of the most important decisions you will make for your bedroom. Get it wrong and even the most beautiful custom bed will feel out of place. Get it right and your bedroom transforms into a perfectly balanced sanctuary.
This guide covers every standard US bed size, who each size suits, how to measure your room, and how to order a fully custom bed in exactly the size you need from The Custom Bed Company in New Jersey.
Standard US Bed Sizes at a Glance
Here are the five standard US mattress and bed frame sizes:
- Twin: 38 inches wide x 75 inches long
- Full (Double): 54 inches wide x 75 inches long
- Queen: 60 inches wide x 80 inches long
- King: 76 inches wide x 80 inches long
- California King: 72 inches wide x 84 inches long
Twin Size Beds
The Twin is the smallest standard US bed size at 38 x 75 inches. It is ideal for children's bedrooms, single sleepers in smaller rooms, and guest rooms where space is limited. Our kids bed collection is available in Twin size and can be customized in any fabric and color to create the perfect children's bedroom.
Full Size Beds (Double)
The Full, also called a Double, measures 54 x 75 inches. It is a good choice for a single adult who wants more sleeping width than a Twin, or for guest rooms. At 54 inches wide, it is tight for two adults but workable. The Full is also popular for teenagers transitioning from a kids bed.
Queen Size Beds
The Queen at 60 x 80 inches is the most popular bed size in America. It provides ample space for two adults, fits comfortably in most master bedrooms, and offers the best balance of size and room space. Nearly all of our luxury bed and TV lift bed models are available in Queen size. If you are unsure which size to choose, Queen is almost always the right answer for a couple.
King Size Beds
The King at 76 x 80 inches is the widest standard US bed. At 76 inches wide, it is the same length as a Queen but 16 inches wider — giving each person their own sleeping space. A King bed makes a powerful statement in a large master bedroom and pairs beautifully with a tall upholstered headboard. We recommend a room at least 12 feet wide to accommodate a King bed comfortably.
California King Size Beds
The California King at 72 x 84 inches is 4 inches narrower than a King but 4 inches longer. It is the best choice for taller sleepers (over 6 feet 2 inches) or for rooms that are longer than they are wide. The California King has a more elongated, elegant proportion that looks spectacular with a tall upholstered headboard in our luxury bed collection.
How to Choose the Right Bed Size
Follow these steps to choose your perfect size:
- Measure your room. Leave at least 24 to 30 inches of clearance on each side of the bed for walking and nightstands.
- Consider your height. If you are taller than 6 feet 2 inches, consider a California King for extra leg room.
- Consider your sleeping partner. Couples generally prefer Queen or King for the most comfortable sleep.
- Think about the look. A larger bed with a tall headboard creates a more dramatic, hotel-like bedroom feel.
